  • Gordon Kruse receives distinguished scientist award

    The North Pacific Fishery Management Council has awarded Gordon Kruse the first Terry Quinn II Distinguished Scientist Award. Kruse is a fisheries researcher and a University of ÐÓ°ÉÔ­°æ Fairbanks professor emeritus of fisheries and ocean sciences.

  • Doug Schrage wins statewide fire chief award

    Douglas Schrage, ÐÓ°ÉÔ­°æ's fire chief, is this year's recipient of the Warren B. Cummings Fire Chief of the Year Award. Schrage received the award in early February at the ÐÓ°ÉÔ­°æ Fire Chiefs Leadership Symposium in Juneau.

  • Artist, founder of ÐÓ°ÉÔ­°æ Native Art Center Ron Sengungetuk passes away

    Iñupiaq artist Ronald Senungetuk, 87, passed away on Jan. 21, 2020 at his home in Homer. He was a world renowned sculptor, silversmith and wood carver, who also had massive cultural influence as an artist, educator and mentor. The University of ÐÓ°ÉÔ­°æ Fairbanks conferred emeritus status on Senungetuk when he retired as head of the Art Department in 1986, and awarded him an honorary doctorate of fine arts in 2015.

  • Researcher recognized by peony industry

    The ÐÓ°ÉÔ­°æ Peony Growers Association awarded its Growers Cup to longtime University of ÐÓ°ÉÔ­°æ Fairbanks researcher Bob Van Veldhuizen. Members of the statewide association honored Van Veldhuizen during its winter conference, which ended Saturday in Fairbanks. The award recognizes individuals who provide key support to the peony industry.

    Eloise Petrone Brown has joined the ÐÓ°ÉÔ­°æ Hydrokinetic Energy Research Center and Pacific Marine Energy Center teams. AHERC and PMEC are part of ÐÓ°ÉÔ­°æ's ÐÓ°ÉÔ­°æ Center for Energy and Power.

  • CBPP Dean Karen Markel departing UAA next summer

    Karen Markel, dean of the UAA College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP), has accepted a job as dean of the College of Business at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. She will complete the academic year at UAA and begin her new post in Colorado on July 6, 2020.

    Jennifer Harris named ÐÓ°ÉÔ­°æ's ACEP deputy director for operations

    The ÐÓ°ÉÔ­°æ Center for Energy and Power has named Jennifer Harris as the new deputy director of operations. Harris most recently served as the executive officer in the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences.

  • Teri Cothren appointed associate vice president of workforce development

    In May, Teri Cothren was promoted to associate vice president of workforce development at the University of ÐÓ°ÉÔ­°æ. She replaced Fred Villa, who retired earlier this year. "I feel privileged to work with university colleagues and partners around the state to help increase access to education for ÐÓ°ÉÔ­°æns," Cothren said. "It is inspiring to work with people who choose to dedicate their career to education and making ÐÓ°ÉÔ­°æ a better place."
