Position Classification System

Job family descriptions reflect the nature and complexity of work at several levels within each job family. The classification system is used across the University, providing consistent alignment of positions, structure for identifying career ladders, and benchmarks for conducting external salary surveys.

What is a Position Description (PD)?

A general description of the job, including work performed and skills, effort, level of responsibility, and working conditions of the work performed. It’s a tool used for classification, performance evaluation, and job audits. It is different from a job posting that is written to attract potential candidates. 

What is a Job Family?

A position grouping where jobs are categorized the same because they perform similar types of work. The level of placement within the job family is based on varying responsibility, scope, and complexity of work being performed.

What is a PCLS Code?

The position classification number used to identify if a position is exempt or non-exempt as defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Each classification level within a UA job family is assigned a position classification (PCLS) following FLSA guidelines. Some classifications include an alternative PCLS code to reflect that positions within the classification level may be classified as either exempt or non-exempt based on the specific position job duties.
